Plastic free clothing
Did you know that approximately 60% of our clothing is made up of plastic?
Every time you wash your clothes, tiny microfibres are released into the water and these contribute to the microplastic problem in the oceans where they are consumed by marine life and enter the food chain.

Is this a problem locally?
This is a problem absolutely everywhere. Without scientific equipment it’s impossible to evidence so we can’t point you to examples of this locally, we will have to go with the scientists on this one.
How does this affect me?
Every time you wash your clothes, you are contributing to the microplastics problem.
What’s the alternative?
There are a couple of alternatives. You can use guppy bags or devices such as cora ball to catch more of the microfibres created by washing your clothes, these are available in a lot of places now.

You can also purchase clothing that doesn’t contain plastic. For example, the Marine Conservation Society have a range of clothing produced from organic cotton, which is designed to be returned to them and recycled into new clothing once worn out.
